What do you look for most when you pick up a book? a.) A beautiful writing style b.) a character driven story? c.) A plot driven story
It depends on my mood, I believe. If I don’t want to do too much thinking, a plot driven story is perfect–something like The Da Vinci Code or Jack Reacher. But I generally love character driven stories and beautiful writing styles. It’s rare to have all three in one book and I love it.
What are your pet peeves in books?
Lately it’s been love triangles and annoying characters who don’t push the plot foreword.
If you could print one quote on your wall, which one would it be?
This super long passage from Lord of the Rings where Sam and Frodo talk about stories in The Two Towers.
Which genre would you like to explore more?
Probably more true crime books or biographies. I used to like true crime but not as much anymore. And more historical books set in eras I don’t normally read about.
Was there ever a movie adaptation you liked better than the book?
Probably Cold Mountain and Pride and Prejudice. With Cold Mountain, I liked the book equally to the movie and I just liked Keira Knightley’s version of Pride and Prejudice better than Austen’s novel. I’d say Forrest Gump too, but I never finished the book, only got 20-30 pages in. Tom Hanks made Forrest more lovable.
If one of your favorite books would be adapted or get a new adaptation, which book would it be, and which role would you like to play?
I’d love to see A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray get an adaptation, it’s a great movie. I’d love to see a new interpretation of Harry Potter with the same director and actors throughout.
A hyped book you wouldn’t recommend at all?
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I was 100 pages from finishing the book and couldn’t stand the book anymore. Didn’t enjoy it at all.
A book that highly influenced your life and way of thinking?
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro was a profound book when I read it at the time. And Atonement by Ian McEwan. Tuesdays With Morrie is also a big hit with me.
Are you a fan of re-reading books, do you do it often?
I read books over again a lot but I’m trying not to as much so I get through more books! There’s just something about getting something out of my favorite book a second time around.
Which book title could easily be the title of your life?
James Herriot’s Dog Stories was first in my mind when I saw this question. Because I always have dog stories about my dog. Of course my name isn’t James Herriot, but the Dog Stories part is relevant. Maybe The Light in Hidden Places could come as a second.
Which book should be required reading for everyone?
All the books! Just kidding, I don’t know. I enjoyed Hill Women and Hillbilly Elegy. Even though I’m not from the South I have a passion for the South and it’s music and life, particularly in the Appalachian region, especially as it comes up in parts of Ohio. They are stereotyped to be a certain way and viewed as stupid, but in fact they have a rich culture that should be viewed and understood if we want them to be integrated with the rest of society.
