When I first saw this show on Discovery +, I had no idea how intense it was going to be. I remember when she died–it was very tragic as she was only 30 at the time. I’d only seen one movie with her in it (Uptown Girls), so I wasn’t a big follower of her per se, but I enjoyed the movie with her in it nonetheless.
If you’d asked me before how she died, I would’ve told you that she went skiing and then died of a heart attack within a day or so. I’d swear up and down that this is what the news was telling everyone.
Boy, was I wrong.
Apparently she was having flu like symptoms leading up to her death and afterwards it was suspected she was doing drugs at the time of death. They suspected her husband for killing her only to have him die exactly five months later with similar symptoms. After some deeper investigation, detectives suspect that he died from arsenic poisoning. Thinking that Brittany also died from this, they tried to exhume her body only to meet resistance from her mother. Murphy’s father tried to fight the decision because he thought his daughter was poisoned but eventually dropped the charges as he was suffering from a terminal illness and didn’t want to fight anymore. The end decision was that Brittany and her husband were hoping to move to New York to have their own lives and try for a baby. Murphy’s mother, not wanting to be left behind, poisoned the both of them.
I don’t know if anyone’s ever pursued the mother since then but it left me rather sad. I don’t think she should have died so young. I think she would have had a great career if she was allowed to live and do her own thing. Neither her mother nor her husband were good for her. I don’t know why I thought she died of a heart attack from skiing. Maybe that was an original thought before they discovered everything else. Whatever the case, her death is still tragic.
