June Book Reads Wrap Up

I finished reading five books in June. This is pretty good for me, considering in the last few years I’ve only managed one or two books a month. Granted, I finished two of them in the last week because frankly they’re “easy” reads, though whether or not they’re “good” is another topic altogether. Nonetheless, I finished five and I feel quite proud of myself.

The five books I finished in the month of June are as follows:

1. It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover
2. Verity by Colleen Hoover
3. Under the Christmas Tree by Robyn Carr
4. The Shining by Stephen King
5. Paradise Valley by Robyn Carr

As I was typing this out, I realized that Stephen King is the only anomaly in this grouping. The other four are by Colleen Hoover and Robyn Carr. I suppose I needed something light for the month of June, otherwise why else would I have read these books?

I read Colleen Hoover because I had a fascination with it. Someone at book club was talking about how insane Verity was, to the point of how bad it was–so I wanted to read it, naturally. It wasn’t very good. Even the writing wasn’t good. But I might have mentioned that before. I picked another book by her because I wanted to get a feel for what she “normally writes,” so I picked It Ends With Us. Unfortunately, it’s about domestic abuse. It has a happy ending (I guess?) but I still don’t think it’s the best thing. I honestly don’t know why Hoover has jumped up in popularity in recent months. She’ll become one of those forgettable writers in 50 years, I’m sure.

The two Robyn Carr books were the next in line for her Virgin River books. I didn’t like the Christmas tree one because the guy was a jerk and the story would have benefited from being a full length book instead of a novella–maybe this would have made the guy more of a human than a jerk, though I doubt it. Some of the men in her regular books are less than savory. As for Paradise Valley, it was just okay from what I remember of it. It wasn’t bad or good, just meh. I’m getting to the point where I don’t want to read anymore books in the series as they’re all starting to sound the same and I’m getting super bored with them. The thought of reading all 19 books in the series seems like torture at this point. They were fun in the beginning, but not so much anymore.

The Shining was a re-read for me. As I’ve probably written about before, I read it when I was first in college and didn’t like it. I wanted to read it again to see how I felt about it a second time around and not much else has changed. I still thought it was a terrible book. So, it wasn’t me, it was the book.

I’m hoping July yields more enthralling books for me. The kind that make me happy to be reading and a joy to write about. June was definitely a dud month for me as a reader.
